National Day of Solidarity with Muslim Arab and South Asian Immigrants

The National Day of Solidarity with Muslim, Arab and South Asian Immigrants is observed annually on February 20th. This day was created to recognize the struggles faced by these communities for equality and justice. It is a day to honor their resilience and strength in the face of adversity.

History

After an influx of xenophobia stemming from the 9/11 attacks and media coverage of extremist Arab groups in the Middle East, there were calls for recognition of Arab, Muslim, and South Asian immigrants. Crackdowns on Arab communities in the United States resulted in the incarceration of thousands of individuals – Muslim and non-Muslim.

In 2002, the National Day of Solidarity with Muslim, Arab, and South Asian Immigrants was established to recognize the importance of these communities and to acknowledge the reality that every Muslim, Arab, and South Asian is not a villain but an individual who contributes greatly to society.

In the years after the 9/11 attacks, there have been countless human rights violations against these groups leading millions to seek refuge in the United States. Individuals fleeing the Uyghur genocide in China brought to light the struggles of Arab and Muslim peoples around the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a sharp and deeply concerning increase in Asian hate. Violence against Asian people increased and business owners faced closure as people stopped frequenting their establishments out of a sense of prejudice.

February 20th is a time to recognize the sacrifices these minorities have made and the hardships they have endured. This day is also a time to uplift the groups that help to make America great.

Taking Action

On this day, individuals can take action and speak out in solidarity with Muslim, Arab, and South Asian immigrants. It’s important to advocate for change, challenge discrimination, and fight for justice. Individuals can also support organizations that are working to protect the rights of these communities.

It is important that we recognize the contributions of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian immigrants to our society. They have enriched our culture with their unique perspectives and experiences. They have made valuable contributions to our economy as entrepreneurs, innovators, workers, and taxpayers.

We must continue to stand in solidarity with Muslim, Arab, and South Asian immigrants on this day and every day.
